Dental Fillings

When dental decay is left untreated, it can wear down enamel and compromise the health of a tooth. After diagnosing a patient with a cavity, Dr. Mitchell Pierce can treat decay and use a tooth-colored filling to restore the strength and appearance of a tooth. Traditional fillings are made of a metal amalgam, which can expand and contract with temperature changes. Dr. Pierce performs all fillings using a durable and discreet composite that bonds more securely to the surface of teeth.

Periodontal Care

Dr. Pierce offers several treatments to improve your periodontal (gum) health. If you suffer from gum disease, he can prescribe special medications or perform a deep cleaning. More significant periodontal infections can damage surrounding bone and tissue. In these cases, Dr. Pierce can perform a bone graft to help restore periodontal tissue. Patients who suffer from exposed tooth roots due to gum recession can undergo a tissue graft to treat the affected area.

When dental decay or damage becomes too significant to repair with a filling or root canal, an extraction may be recommended to maintain good oral health. Fortunately, Dr. Pierce can safely perform tooth extractions with minimal discomfort using local anesthesia and sedation. In addition to extracting damaged teeth, Dr. Pierce can also remove third molars (wisdom teeth) that are likely to be impacted in order to prevent future complications.

TMJ Therapy

The temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, extend from the skull to the lower jaw and facilitates chewing and speaking. TMJ disorder refers to cases where these joints have become damaged or inflamed, which can result in a host of uncomfortable symptoms. If you suffer from TMJ disorder, Dr. Pierce can often effectively treat this condition with a custom orthotic device. This plastic appliance is worn during sleep to gently move the jaw into proper position and alleviate symptoms.

Sleep Apnea Therapy

If you are frequently fatigued, experience persistent headaches, or wake up gasping for air, you may suffer from sleep apnea. The most common type of this condition, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when oral tissues block the flow of air and cause breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep. After performing an accurate diagnosis, Dr. Pierce can often effectively treat OSA using a custom oral appliance that holds the jaw in proper position.

Root Canal Therapy

Extensive tooth decay or trauma can allow bacteria to penetrate into the inner chambers of a tooth and compromise your oral health. In these cases, Dr. Pierce can use root canal therapy to stop the spread of infection and prevent tooth loss. During a root canal procedure, he will create a small hole in the chewing surface of the tooth, remove decayed tissue, clean the interior of the tooth, and fill the resulting space with a rubber-like substance. After undergoing root canal therapy, he often recommends receiving a dental crown to protect the treated tooth.

Crowded or misaligned teeth can detract from your appearance and make it more difficult to maintain proper oral health. If you are seeking teeth that are beautifully straight, he can provide orthodontic treatments to achieve your goals. With orthodontics, gentle pressure is used to gradually adjust the position of teeth. Advances in technology have created new orthodontic treatments that are effective, comfortable, and discreet.

Plaque Smearing

Plaque is a sticky film containing millions of bacteria that can build up on teeth. To analyze your particular oral bacteria and teach you about your dental health, Dr. Pierce can perform a plaque smear. During this procedure, he will take a swab of the plaque on your teeth examine it and allow you to view it on a monitor. This will give him important information for periodontal diagnosis and help you better understand how to improve your oral hygiene.
